Abbie Hour 8- I think that soon we will be able to send rovers to other planets like venus and mercury or maybey even further like neptune or uranus. with science these days itis really possible

Zaara hour 8- I totally agree with you Abbie. I'm npt positive, but I'm pretty sure they've done something very similar to this before. But it's definately possible.

I'm also suprised that it wasnt seriously damaged going through the long trip.

Zaara hour 8-I also noticed and liked how they showed some prospective of being at Mars, like the sky and land there.
(the other one above was also me)

Abbie Hour 8- I agree with you on the damaged thing, with losing all those parts and traveling so far i am surprised that nothing broke. Also I agree with you about the perspective on mars, from everything we (not including NASA people or scientists just normal people) know so far that is probably what mars looks like. Ms.. Ratzel, do you know if they have any pictures on the NASA website taken form the rovers? I was just wondering.....

Jessi G--> hr 8

Is what the robot looked like on the video what it looks like in person???
If so how big is it and what is it made up of??

Jessi G---> hr 8

Can the robot control itself or does it need someone to be controling it from earth 24//7?

I also agree with zaraah i like how they showed prospective of mars and what it might actual look like..

Abbie Hour 8- I'm not quite sure but I'm guessing that the actual rover that amkes it to mars is pretty small although it starts out really big on earth. do you agree?

profile picture

Science Class said

It could be but wouldnt they be worried it couldnt go that far into space without being pretty big?

that last comment was from jessi (and sorry zaraa i spelled your name wrong in one of my comments..)

I think it is possible for the robot to be intact and undamaged after all that bouncing because there were plenty of balloons used to protect what was inside.

Jessi, i believe that the robot is mostly controlled by scientists on earth, however it probably has some actions that it controls on its own. For example the simple task of rolling along and avoiding large rocks is probably handled by itself.

I learned that it takes a rocket about 7 months to reach mars.

I have always wondered and found it interesting how scientists are able to calculate the path of the rocket and have it land safely onto mars.

hour 8- chris
How can they determine that it will make it to Mars without getting hit by an asteroid or meteor in space?

profile picture

Science Class said

at 8:56 pm on May 8, 2008

Hour 8- chris
Jessi, because the trip is long and you need rocket fuel the robot has to be as light as possible and small so that it can make the trip.

The rover sends back both images and sample analysis of the rocks back to earth. The rover has the capability to determine the components of the rock samples.

Abbie, I think that most rovers are similar in size and weight because they have to travel long distances. Also they are designed to take pictures and collect samples in the most efficient way.

the scientists would definitely know if the rover was not on mars because they would know the exact location from the satelite.

becca, the rocket does not need constant fuel because of the difference in gravity in space so most of the traveling is done without using too much fuel. Therefore scientists are able to measure and control the speed and direction of the rocket.

Zaara hour 8- I also agree with everyone about how it landed without any problems. That part doesn't seem very realistic to me. Chris, you also got me thinking about how it could go that far with a certain amount of fuel. I'm not really sure if this makes sense, but they have

Zaara hour 8-I'm not rally sure if this makes sense, but they have things that run off of solar energy on Earth, could they make a rover running off of solar engergy from space??
(sorry my comment got all mixed up I didnt mean to submit it that 1st time)

Zaara hour 8- I'm not sure who said it, but someone commented about controlling the rover and haveing to be there all the time. I was wondering about that also. I'm not sure but if someone knows please comment!
